It's the oldest story in the book, and the bedroom. Say what you will about men and their sometimes gauche, often regrettable sexual attitudes-
their desire is pure--true aesthetics.

A good illustration of this thread - Sven Goran Ericksson pulls yet another hot looking chick.
How come he (and the many other poor deluded vain old sods) cannot see that the woman isn't bedding him because she can't get enough of puny, balding, specky, desperate middle-aged men, but because the
said young woman intends to sell her story for a trillion pounds to the News of the World?
I'm sorry Darlings, forget all that crap that says women are not as shallow as men because what they are really looking for is a nice steady chap to father their children and do the hunter-gatherer bit for them; no woman wants to go to bed with a real minger, unless there's a few bucks in it for her..
You see an ugly guy with a beautiful girl, you know he must have a HUGE wad.... _________________ You see a peanut, and the day's off to a good start. You witness some soil, and it's a jamboree..... |

This song is the counterpoint to "Looks, Looks, Looks" where the guy was a loser in love because although he had sense, he had style, he had cash galore, he lacked LOOKS.
Whereas in UGWBG, the fellow's shortcomings were of an economic nature but he was not deficient in other areas.
Are these songs part of the same saga? Taken together, they seem to imply that the guy in Looks actually triumphed in the end. There are at least two social comments here - that the beautiful girl of UGWBG these days is won with the biggest bank account whereas in the time of Looks she could not be wooed successfully by a guy who wasn't "hot" enough. And that between the two eras only the flavor of her superficiality changed - not the degree. |

I picked other cause most of the time its true you do see ugly guys with beautiful girls most of the time. Because of where I live it is because the ugly guys have money, but on the other hand women like me we would perfer a guy with a personality who can just be fun/funny, charming, geeky at times, etc. money doesn't matter to some of us and neither do looks. Im not saying that im beautiful but all in all their song is based on fact you do see more beautiful women with ugly guys. You have to remember a person is just a person looks or no looks what makes the person is their unique personality and Ugly is only ugly if you believe it is, ugly is just a word. If anybody loses a chick because of money though well they don't deserve you. Rather they are beautiful. =P |

Heh, this song seems to be written precisely to generate such questions and polls :)
If the boy doesn't get the girl, the boy imagines all sort of reasons that DON'T have to do with him, but with various externalities that he can't influence - women like "looks", women like rich guys, women change their minds, even if it's a rich guy involved (as in Dick Around), women like Morrissey... , so he tries to tell the world his story in style and get over the failure by doing this. There are many characters that try it in Sparks' songs and this is one of them. Nice try for the character, but it's not a personal message from Ron and Russell to the world.
Here's their own explanation:
'Suburban Homeboy', with his girlfriend "from the projects of St Tropez" shows that they've lost none of their observational sharpness. "It was written out of affection" maintains Ron. "It's too easy to take a target like that and say 'here's a protest song against that kind of thing'. I really do like that culture. There isn't any vitriol. It isn't satirical."
What about 'Ugly Guys With Beautiful Girls'? Surely that's more vitriolic? "It is, but it's couched by being said by Russell's character. The song isn't making that statement. The character who has had that experience is making that statement".
"I like the fact that that song is overly detailed" muses Russell, neatly summarising the brothers raison d'etre. "It's too long in its narrative. It's seven minutes of elocution about this situation. You didn't need to know all of that but we thought we'd tell you even more than you needed to know."

I think one should rather say: Pretty young women with much older men, without these men being particularly ugly.
Money is not always (only) reason, there is also the fame, the fascination with the artist and his talent. See the story of the writer Dostoevsky and his last wife ... A remarkable woman who supported and endured the vice of the game of her husband, the illustrious writer, because she was deeply in love with his talent and his fragile personality.
If you don't see a lot of handsome young men with older women. It is simply because it has long been condemned in our society.
Edith Piaf married Theo Sarapo who was 20 years younger than her. Their love story resulted in a wonderful song (À quoi ça sert l'amour.) but they were cruelly criticized by the society of that time. Now things are going better, but it is just tolerated and these women are often laughed at (stupid Jokes about Madonna''s husband).
Russell as late Jacqueline Kennedy's ex-husband must understand what I mean :) :) |
