In case anyone missed it, the Clash Music article above is the only one I've seen so far with an interview (with Ron).

Andy Gill was there!!!

Quote: There's an echo of Albιniz in "Dick Around", and a touch of Kurt Weill about the rolling swing of "Good Morning"

Oh Yes?!!! :-) Although I kind of know what he means, when I think about it...

Russell, clad in dark jacket and green trousers, has the unfeasibly youthful demeanour of a debauched Justin Bieber

Terrific and so well written I will like steal some of these fantastically fitting phrases to use in my posts, and happily be accused of plagiarism. It definitely echoed my experience that memorable night. You also thankfully shed light on a dimension of Sparks songs I'd missed over many years of being a fan. That's the great thing about Sparks' music - discovering more and more and never getting fed up. Above all, probably the most personal and therefore touching review I've seen published.

The Mail On sunday's Review supplement has this review by Tim de Lisle
Quote:
Their (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) contemporaries SPARKS have been in London too, proving that this town is big enough for the both of them. The Mael brothers can't go on tour without having a bright idea. Last time it was playing all their albums over 21 nights; this time it is ditching their sidemen and performing a deux. In their mid-60s, they are beginning to swap personas. Ron, who frightened children in 1974 by looking like Hitler with a synthesiser, has mellowed into a friendly physics teacher, while Russell, once a Bolan-style pretty boy, now has the boot-polish forelock of a man auditioning for the lead in Downfall. His voice is undimmed, and here he is yodelling to the converted. Fans mouthed the words as the Maels took a spin through one of pop's more twisty oeuvres. With the sound stripped down, their antecedants showed through-Berlin cabaret, music hall and even country. Russell's dancefloor falsetto was a reminder that the Bee-Gees were not the only masters of that art. And when Sparks relived their Euro-disco period, with Number One Song In Heaven and Beat The Clock, you could see that if they had only waited 30 years, they could have been David Guetta.
